4 Day — Colour, light and shadow

Workshop in Oils/Acrylic— 7-10th May, 2020

Limited to 12

This 4 day realist painting workshop is suitable for participants of all skill-levels. If you are interested in creating representational art and would like to rapidly transform your skills and increase your confidence in colour and drawing, this workshop is for you.

Kathy will teach you how she works through her realist technique, beginning with understanding colour and its use in shaddow and light. Image selection and the use of software to enhance light and shadow. For those who can only do stick figures, Kathy shares techniques on how to transfer the image accurately onto canvas, and undertaking the actual painting process — all to capture the movement, colour and light of your subjects, as well as their spirit.

You will learn techniques which will help you draw with much greater accuracy, as well as learn how to manipulate colour and light to depict any subject with vibrant energy. The 4 days will give you the opportunity to create at least two paintings: one simple image, and one more challenging to reinforce what you have learned. You may use your own images (any subject), or choose from some of Kathy’s, or follow along with her.

Materials are included in the cost: All paints are supplied, along with the use of an easel and palette. Vinyl gloves, paper towel. Brushes are not supplied, but will be available for purchase. Also included within the cost is a budget of $40 for canvases; you can pick and choose what size you would like for your masterpieces. Paints, brushes and extra canvases will be available for purchase.

If you've ever thought about trying oils, now is your chance. Students have been pleasantly surprised at the lack of smell as Kathy uses low volatilty odourless products. She will be painting in oil, but you are also more than welcome to use acrylic.

Cost: $480 for 4 days. Time: 9.30am-4pm daily. Workshop numbers are limited to 12, but a minimum of 5 people will be required for the workshop to go ahead. Confirmation will be given 2 weeks out from the workshop. Cancellations can be made up to 2 weeks prior. We ask for a $100 deposit on booking.

This workshop will be held at Kathy Ellem Fine Art, 45 Ford Street, Beechworth.
